- Radon is a gas resulting from the natural disintegration of uranium, a mineral naturally present in more or less important concentration, depending on the geographical region.
- This odourless, colourless and radioactive gas seeps into buildings from basement cracks and well water, and is then released into the air.
- Exposure to high concentrations of radon gas indoors elevates the risk of lung cancer. Prolonged exposure to radon gas is the causal factor in 10% of lung cancer cases. The other 90% are due to tobacco use.
- The use of a radon sump basin allows the capture of radon gas from the well water and its safe evacuation outside of the house.
