Life cycle assessment (LCA)

Life cycle assessment (LCA)
A comparative analysis clearly demonstrates the environmental benefits of our recycled HDPE pipes in terms of climate change (GHG), energy consumption, and overall impact.

Impacts assessed for 9 indicators.
LCA, of the “cradle-to-grave” type, including all stages of the life cycle from the extraction of raw materials to the product’s end of life. Conducted by Ellio, a consulting agency specialized in sustainable development, the assessment was also submitted and validated by an independent critical review.
The impacts of HDPE and CONCRETE pipes are assessed using a total of 9 indicators, mainly related to resource depletion and impacts on ecosystems.

Up to 61% less environmental impact than concrete pipe of the same diameter.
The analysis shows that a recycled HDPE pipe emits at least 39% less greenhouse gases than a concrete pipe.
What’s more, for every 1,000 feet of pipe installed in HDPE rather than concrete, CO₂ (GHG) emissions are reduced by 11.3 tonnes, the equivalent of driving 1.12 times around the earth.

CSA-B182-8-R certification by CSA
Soleno is proud to be the first company in Canada to obtain CSA B182.8-R certification, audited by CSA. This achievement represents a formal recognition of our ability to create our resin composition, for the manufacture of our pipes, from recycled material. Thanks to CSA B182.8-R certification, all our CSA-certified products incorporate more than 75% to 100% recycled material, while meticulously respecting the performance standards of the finished product.
Our St-Jean-sur-Richelieu and McAdam plants participate in the manufacture of pipes certified according to the CSA B182.8-R standard, thus guaranteeing quality and durability. As an Industry Ecoleader, our commitment to reducing environmental impact is at the heart of our operations.
A fully integrated Canadian model
Our model makes it possible to recycle more than 150 million plastic containers from domestic use annually, the equivalent of 50 tons of plastic per day.
Once placed in your bin, containers from domestic use are reprocessed into recycled plastic before being integrated into the manufacturing process of products dedicated to rainwater control.
These products are then distributed and installed, beneath our fields, our roads, and our infrastructure all across eastern North America.

The Soleno Innovation Hub symbolizes our desire to contribute to change in current practices.
By stimulating scientific research, we intend to develop technologies to transform these recyclable plastics, previously destined for landfills or export, into high-performance and environmentally friendly products.
Today, the Hub has a world-class laboratory that combines the expertise of private, government, and academic partners. In collaboration with these partners, the Hub aims to integrate the training and supervision of highly qualified workers in the field of plastics processing.
