A constrained site requiring an efficient underground solution
This project involved the construction of a four-storey long-term care facility in Niagara Falls, Ontatio, with strict requirements for underground stormwater management. Limited available footprint, restricted access, and tight construction timelines necessitated a solution that was both space-efficient and adaptable.
While the initial design specified a concrete-based system, an alternative approach was identified to simplify installation, optimize constructability, and increase onsite flexibility. Given the constrained site conditions and limited maneuvering space, a lightweight, modular system emerged as the most suitable option.

Managing stormwater under tight spatial and scheduling constraints
The project team had to address several constraints, including a limited excavation footprint, restricted working room, and a strict construction schedule. The system also needed to be installed beneath a parking area, requiring compliance with vehicular load standards, while remaining adaptable to unforeseen underground obstructions encountered during construction.

The RAUSIKKO geocellular retention system was selected to address the project’s footprint constraints, installation requirements, and schedule objectives. The system was designed with a 8.8 m x 32.0 m footprint, providing a total retention capacity of 279.8 m³ using a two-layer RAUSIKKO SX configuration, installed to an overall depth of approximately 4.0 m to finished grade.
Compliant with CSA CL-625 load requirements, the system is suitable for installation beneath the parking area and ensures long-term structural performance under vehicular loading. Product availability and compatibility with the project timeline further supported the selection of the RAUSIKKO solution.
During installation, the modular nature of the system proved particularly valuable. When an existing 525 mm concrete pipe along the north side of the site conflicted with the original basin layout, the footprint was easily adjusted eastward, maintaining required clearances while preserving the designed storage volume—without delays or redesign.
