A rainwater retention challenge in the heart of a protected urban park
The aquatic facilities at Ignace-Bourget Park, located in Montréal’s Sud-Ouest borough, underwent a complete rehabilitation during 2025, with a reopening scheduled for summer 2026.
As part of this project, a watertight stormwater retention system was required to meet site drainage requirements. The main challenge was to achieve a required storage volume of 220.6 m³ while minimizing the impact of construction on existing vegetation and working around nearby municipal services. A thorough evaluation was therefore necessary to identify the solution offering the best balance between hydraulic performance, compact footprint, and site integration.

A modular, compact, and environmentally friendly solution
Following a review of available options, RAUSIKKO geocellular systems were chosen for their high storage efficiency (up to 96% of volume) and minimal footprint compared to traditional solutions.
Their modular design allowed precise adjustments to navigate around municipal services and preserve mature trees, with only minor vegetation removal required. To support long-term performance, a sedimentation row using RAUSIKKO SC elements was installed at the inlet, capturing sediments to maintain the system’s hydraulic capacity.

Efficient sediment management
Integrated sedimentation channels capture and trap debris and sediments upstream, limiting contamination of the detention basin. This design helps maintain long-term hydraulic performance while simplifying maintenance operations.
Simple and rapid installation
Once the waterproof membrane was in place, installation of the RAUSIKKO elements began immediately. Thanks to the intuitive EasyClick snap-fit connection system, which requires no additional components, the basin was completed in one and a half days by a compact crew consisting of one foreman, four laborers, and one wheel loader operator, significantly reducing construction time and on-site interventions.
Modularity and site adaptability
The modular nature of the system made it possible to precisely adapt the system dimensions to site constraints, including nearby municipal services and site geometry, without compromising the required storage volume.
Minimal footprint
Thanks to its high storage efficiency and optimized space utilization, the RAUSIKKO solution offers a small footprint, reducing excavation volumes and contributing to the preservation of surrounding vegetation and natural features.
