The Context

An HDPE solution for the renewal of a collapsing culvert with a large-diameter

The corrugated galvanized sheet pipe situated in the bed of the Grande-Prairie stream demonstrated signs of default which caused the closing of the area where the pipe passes under the St-Philippe road. Ms. Johanne Desrosiers, Assistant of Technical services department at the city of Mascouche, needed to rapidly proceed to the replacement of the large-diameter culvert in order to reestablish the area’s circulation while assuring the water’s free drainage and the aquatic fauna’s free circulation towards the Mascouche River.

The Solution

Due to its length, 35 m (115 ft), and its big diameter of 3300 mm (130 in), the replacement of the pipe by a large diameter HDPE  pipe was selected. Using a conventional excavation method, these were installed in a trench 8 m (26 ft) deep by 18.2 m (59.7 ft) wide by Sintra Inc. This installation was a first for the contractor.
